Acid reflux lump in throat feeling: Causes and 4 Natural remedies

Are you having a lump like feeling at the back of your throat?

Are you experiencing a slight difficulty swallowing the foods?

And finally, are you constantly having a feeling of something stuck at the back of your throat? (especially near the esophagus)

Then there is a chance that this all could be just because of your severe acid reflux and heartburn. Yes, recent research clearly revealed the relationship between acid reflux lump in throat, difficulty swallowing, how it is caused etc and everything.

The Acid Reflux:

If you are reading this article, you might probably know what an acid reflux is and how it feels like..

Acid reflux/heartburn is a problem that is caused due to the improper functioning of the esophagus-stomach linked muscle namely lower esophageal sphincter (LES). Whenever you eat food, the LES muscle opens up for a small time. This eventually closes down after some time in order to prevent the backflow of stomach acids into the throat and esophagus.

So, when this LES fails to close properly even after the eating, this results in the stomach acids, food juices to flow up the esophagus causing a burning sensation near the chest area. This is what we call the acid reflux or the heartburn.

Now, Is this what you are feeling whenever you are having the acid reflux?

  • A lump like feeling in the throat
  • Difficulty swallowing foods, juices sometimes even saliva
  • A feeling like some particle is stuck near the throat
  • A Globus like sensation all the time

If Yes, Then this all could be the result of regular damage that is being caused by the acids in your throat.

what is this lump in the throat feeling? Is acid reflux the reason behind everything? How?

Go and ask a person who had acid reflux for the first or second time “Are you having a lump like feeling the throat?”

The straight answer from him would be NO..

According to a research conducted on several people, it was found that people who have slight problems with acid reflux then he/she may never have this strange problem of difficulty swallowing. On the other hand, if you are having regular acid refluxes and mainly if you are having GERD disease, then you are likely to be experiencing irritating stuck feelings in your throat. (This may include some or all the symptoms mentioned above)

This is all because of… inflammation

Yes, If you are having a lump like feeling at the back of the throat (especially whenever you are having acid reflux) it is a clear sign of inflammation and irritation in the esophagus of your throat.

This is what we call as esophagitis

Esophagitis is nothing but the inflammation that is formed on the linings of the esophagus tube. The main reason behind this inflammation is your excess acid reflux. This is the common problem that arises in people having recurring acid refluxes.

If you are having frequent acid refluxes, your esophagus is regularly under the exposure to acidic stomach acids. This regular exposure gradually forms a swelling/inflammation of the esophagus and throat tissues causing a lump like feeling the throat. This is what causes a feeling of something stuck in the throat and also the problem of difficulty swallowing.

One of the natural and most powerful antacids available is the baking soda. All you need to do is, add a tablespoon of baking soda into water, mix it and drink it slowly such that it reduces the inflammation and the acid reflux causing it.

3. Taking Manuka Honey:

Manuka honey is a special type of honey that has strong antibacterial properties. Thus, it is one of the important things to consider for acid reflux lump in the throat. Moreover, honey is a natural healer and heals down the inflammation and damage happened in the esophagus.

So take a tablespoon of manuka honey at least 4 times a day in order to unleash the benefits of manuka honey on reducing your acid reflux and a lump in the throat feeling.

4. Elevating your pillow’s height:

During the acid reflux, the acids in the stomach push upwards thus affecting the layers of the esophagus. This, in turn, is responsible for inflammation and the esophagitis. Thus changing your body’s position while sleeping can have a deep effect on these acids pushing up.

For this, you need to slightly elevate your pillow’s height (than normal), especially while sleeping. Thus doing so, the acids won’t reach your throat easily and thus reduces the effect of stomach acids on your esophagus and throat even if you have severe acid reflux.

Further complication:

As I have already said, the main cause for the lump in the throat feeling, difficulty swallowing everything is your acid reflux. Thus controlling your acid reflux is the most important thing you must do to get rid of all these symptoms.

Failing to control and stop your acid refluxes may lead to further complications, in addition to inflammation and esophagitis. This mainly include esophageal stricture, which is the narrowing of your esophagus due to the development of scar tissue caused by repeated inflammation of acid refluxes
